What's
in store for the future of Alfa Romeo? The new Visconti
concept car, designed by ItalDesign could hold the secret
to the brand. Without running around the point too much,
the Visconti is what ItalDesign figures the replacement
to the 156, the 157 might look like. This is yet another
vehicle designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, who is seemingly
closely knit to the Italian marque which leaped over
from Pininfarina in the '80s and '90s. This is the firm
that's responsible for the recent facelift of the 156
and its Crosswagon brother, and the Brera sports coupe,
which is headed for production. The Visconti concept
packs the knowhow of Alfa's mechanical expertise with
the styling of ItalDesign.
8C
Competizione
Designed
and developed at the Alfa Romeo Style Centre, this prototype
will become a true brand icon, evoking a great sports
car tradition of which the name is part. In the Thirties
and Forties, the '8c' signature that returns here, identified
the racing and road cars that were equipped with the
new eight cylinder engine developed by the famous engineer
Vittorio Jano. The term 'Competizione' on the other
hand, is a tribute to the 6C 2500 Competizione, the
sports coupe driven by Fangio and Zanardi in the famous
Mille Miglia race in 1950. So '8c Competizione' is not
an invented name, but a clear reference to Alfa's racing
history. And of course the Alfa Romeo legend was created
to a great extent by the victories its cars achieved
on race courses all around the world. There were so
many of them that alone they represent a long, fascinating
chapter, made of men and competitive spirit, engines
and cutting edge technical ideas. The protagonists of
the inestimable human and technological heritage that
is responsible for today's beautiful cars, full of character
and, above all, capable of combining the beauty of the
styling with the pleasure of driving them.
Alfa
GT
The
Alfa GT, a new sports coupe derived from the Alfa 156
and indisputable star of the recent Geneva and Frankfurt
Motor Shows, is due to go on sale at the end of the
year. The model, designed by the Bertone Style Centre,
will be appreciated for its original, pleasing styling
that promises all the satisfaction of a sporty drive
with full respect for brand traditions. The Alfa GT
also succeeds in packing the results of Alfa's superlative
engineering heritage into a shape inspired by a sense
of style and flair that could only be Italian. The stylists
were also able to call on a great Alfa Romeo tradition
that has brought us models that remain benchmarks for
the category: from the 1900 SS to the Giulietta Sprint,
from the Alfetta to the Giulia Sprint. With a length
of 4.48 metres, width of 1.76 metres and a height of
1.37 metres, the Alfa GT Coupe is aggressive and compact
(its wheelbase is 2596 millimetres), with a shape marked
by certain distinctive traits that define its strong
personality and render it immediately recognisable as
an Alfa.
Brera
ItalDesign's
Alfa Romeo Brera, the smash hit of the Geneva Auto Salon,
is fully production ready according to Alfa Romeo. The
all wheel drive, V8 powered prototype, penned by the
legendary Giorgetto Giugiaro, is a traditional 2+2 GT
coupe design with bodywork entirely in carbon fiber.
The engine, a 90 degree V8 displacing 4.2 liters, produces
402 bhp. To aid in servicing, the entire front clip
of the Brera can be removed to provide easy access. The
engine is set rearward in the chassis to aid with weight
distribution, and the car features a rear transaxle
with the Selespeed sequential gearbox.
